Welcome to New Faces, where we are pleased to introduce some of the new romance authors in the industry. We're delighted to welcome Debra Mullins, whose pirate historical Once a Mistress is now on shelves. Welcome, Debra!
Tell us about yourself.
I was born in New York City and have lived in Northern NJ since I was 4
years old. Last year I left a dead-end job to attend a computer school full
time. I sold my book the last week of school while trying to study for
exams and complete a paper to graduate with Honors.
Are you coming to romance writing from another job?
I work full time for a major corporation as a tech support representative
for the company's software.
What led you to write romance?
I am a long-time reader of romance, and I have always been fascinated by
the dynamics between men and women.
Tell us about your road to publication.
I have been a member of RWA and New Jersey Romance Writers for six years.
I also have a very supportive critique group. When ONCE A MISTRESS made
the Golden Heart Finals in May of 1996, I started actively sending it out.
Avon bought the book in January of 1998.
Who are your influences as a writer?
I have read every book that Nora Roberts has written. I also love Linda
Howard, Jayne Ann Krentz, Christina Dodd and Mercedes Lackey, who writes
fantasy.
What does your family think of having a romance author in their
midst?
My children think it's cool that their mom is going to have a book they
can buy at the bookstore. My mother and sisters have been very supportive
since the book sold.
Tell us about plans for future books.
My next book is a Western called DONOVAN'S BED, which is due out
tentatively from Avon in late 1999. I am already contracted for a third
book with Avon.
How can readers get in touch with you?
I'd love to hear from readers, and they can reach me at debwrite@bellatlantic.net
Thanks, Debra, and best of luck! Readers, check out our review of Once a Mistress.
